Re: wel cofihasan

Post by quality on Tue Jan 20, 2015 11:17 pm

so i had to do an essay for ENG 121 just now

Spoiler:
The Importance of Listening to Nothing and Something

In her piece “Doing Nothing is Something,” Quindlen presents her opinion on how humans are at their most natural when they have free time, and that modern life is slowly eliminating that. Quindlen hopes to get through to the parents of American children that free time is good, and in that regard the essay may not be effective. However, Quindlen’s piece is very well written, and brings up some excellent points about what a lack of free time has done to children that will soon need to be addressed by American society.
The most important point that Quindlen brings to the table in her essay is that parents overschedule their children with busywork in an attempt to make them better people to the point where they often have no free time at all. As years have passed, this has become a more and more relevant matter. With each and every passing year that they grow, children find themselves losing more time to homework and after-school events that their parents often arrange which attempt to mold them into hard workers. With every birthday, children are encouraged to work harder, or be forgotten in a sea of competition. And, while this desire for children to be hard workers and to achieve is understandable, it often comes at a great cost to downtime, something that children need in their lives. Not only does this downtime have value in helping them to get out all of their pent up energy – something too many parents overlook out of fear of their children getting into trouble – but it also allows them time to think, and gives them a time to be creative. Without a chance to simply be who they are, children are slowly losing the ability to imagine, and instead are causing more trouble. It is for these reasons that Quindlen’s point is an important one; American society needs to accept downtime for what it is, and let it be.

Quindlen also raises the point that society’s inability to find free time has made it so that people now consider a worker taking time out of her life to visit her son once a week as “true dedication.” While such a thing is undoubtedly dedication, the implications that it has for society are not pleasant. The fact that such a thing now draws applause from the peanut gallery should be a sign of changing times. People are so far removed from spending time with their kids that when someone actually does spend time with their children, they are heralded as the model of what a human should be. And, what makes this all the more unpleasant is that it was not long ago when it seemed like parents and their children would spend whole days together. Of course, the bond between parent and child has long been exaggerated, but when the bond between parents and kids now is compared to what it was just two or three decades ago, it almost seems like children and parents do not bond at all anymore. Before long, there may very well be no true relationship between parents and children. However, as Quindlen says at the end of her essay, there is still hope for the kids of America, and with them their parents. All it takes is a little bit of listening, and the ability to adapt.

All in all, Quindlen’s essay is a piece that both raises excellent points and is written in a way that everybody can understand. And, while I do not necessarily agree with some of the smaller points, I do agree with the main ideas, and what she says is both logical and supported by research. That being said, her essay is one that needs to be taken to heart by everyone, not for the sake of just the children, but for the sake of everyone. If even a quarter of the things that were mentioned persist, our nation may regret it for the rest of time.
